Alison’s watercolors are inspired by the places and people she loves. Her travels provide her with ample source material, and some of her best work depicts scenes and places she has visited (Iceland, Russia, Cape Cod).

Born on Cape Cod, Alison comes from a very artistic family. Her mother is a gifted sculptor, knitter and decorator; her grandfather is known for his drawings, wood-carvings and scrimshaw; and her father is a talented cartoonist. The gift seems to be passed down from generation to generation – though where it will strike next no one truly knows, as Alison herself was formally trained as a Russian Specialist and had never picked up a brush, "I never thought of myself as artistic, that realm was reserved for my mother and her family," she says.

But it was this studies that gave her the first inspirations for her art. Trips to Russia have resulted in some of her favorite work, and her family possesses these works in their private collections. "There is something I gain from the spirit of a place, something that helps me imbue a work with that spirit." And whatever that something is, Alison’s work conveys a feeling of being there, in the place her landscapes depict.

Alison lives and works in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, with her partner, and two Shih Tzu (seen here resting in one of their several favorite lounging spaces), who act as her art critics.
